Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce

Miss Benson's Beetle by Rachel JoyceMargery Benson is a teacher living in postwar London. Single, and feeling like her life has passed her by, Margery reaches her breaking point and quits her job. Ever since her father gave her a book on cryptozoology as a child, she has dreamed about mounting an expedition to New Caledonia to search out the elusive Golden Beetle. Never having had the confidence to do such a thing, Margery decides that now is the time, and begins her preparations. The assistant she hires, Enid Pretty, is nothing like the assistant she was looking for, but the two women set out on the long journey nonetheless.

New Caledonia is full of surprises for both Margery and Enid, and in the tropical jungle, on an island on the other side of the world, the two women discover so much more than just a beetle. This is a perfect read if you’re looking for something that’s uplifting and on the lighter side.
